Why I bought an EV Truck. Yes, it’s cheaper.

A lot of people still believe that the smaller price tag at the dealership means that gas vehicles are more cost effective. I’ve got news for you… That’s true… but only in the short term. In the long term EVs are so much more cost effective. Especially in today’s world of petroleum prices.

Don’t just take my word for it. Let me break down the math for you.

Let’s look at a few traditional gasoline vehicles and their MPG ratings

VehicleMSRPCity MPGHighway MPG
Ford F-150 XLT60k1824
Volkswagen Tiguan SE38k2230
Honda Civic Sport27k3139

Of those examples, the averages are 41k, 23 MPG City, and 31 MPG Highway.

At a price of 3.00 per gallon, they cost, on average, $0.10 per gallon highway and $0.13 per gallon city. If we assume a 50/50 split, we’re looking at an average of $0.115 per gallon. Multiply that by 100k miles, you will spend $11,500 for gas. This is optimal. We know the “rated” MPG is not what anyone actually gets. At 4.00 per gallon, those numbers shift to $0.165 per gallon, for $16,500.

Conversely, the Ford F150-Lightning consistently gets at its worst, 1.8 miles per kWh. Electricity rates today (at least for me) are $0.0933/kWh. That means a cost of $0.052 per mile. At 100k miles, that’s a whopping $5,200.00.

At its worst, the F150-lightning runs at less than 1/2 the cost than the average gas vehicle.

Let’s compare the F150 to F150 for a more balanced comparison. The gas version costs you (at its absolute best) $0.15/mile and the EV version (at its absolute worst) is $0.052/mile. 1/3 the cost. And that’s giving the gas vehicle the absolute best MPG scenario and giving the EV the absolute worst.

Add to that the fact that in the gas vehicle, you need to do oil changes, transmission fluid changes, coolant, antifreeze, and all kinds of other maintenance, while the EV has none of those (both, obviously, have tires, brakes, etc.), your savings over the life of the vehicle are magnified.

EVs are the future, and I, for one, cannot wait until the masses realize it.
